What to establish before troubleshooting

A controller in fault or nonvolatile-load behavior is an evidence problem before it is a reset problem.

Preserve LEDs, display messages, major-fault type and code, task and routine location, power history, key-switch state, project identity, and storage settings.

Separate recoverable application faults from power, storage, firmware, hardware, and safety-related conditions.

Abbreviated worked example

Example: controller returns to fault after every power cycle

A CompactLogix controller can be cleared online but faults again during startup.

  1. 1Capture the major-fault record and startup source before clearing.
  2. 2Compare nonvolatile-load settings, stored image identity, firmware, project revision, and the instruction named by the fault.
  3. 3Correct the proven application or startup mismatch and repeat a controlled cold-start test.

Result: The recurring startup cause is removed without overwriting the best available project or masking a hardware problem.

Caution: A download, firmware flash, or nonvolatile restore can replace the controller application; preserve and verify the recovery source first.
