What to establish before troubleshooting
A 1756-DHRIO channel can operate as DH+ or Remote I/O, and its software configuration, physical rotary switch, baud, link routing, rack addressing, and wiring must describe the same network.
Preserve channel and protocol counters before resets, map the physical trunk in order, then distinguish module/backplane, routing, node or rack configuration, block-transfer, and physical-media boundaries.
Abbreviated worked example
Example: DH+ browsing works but routed MSG fails
Devices appear on the local DH+ channel, yet a Logix message routed through the DHRIO returns a path error.
- 1Capture the module channel mode, link IDs, routing table, MSG path, and error words.
- 2Prove each chassis and network hop without changing node addresses or clearing counters.
Result: The route or link-ID boundary is identified separately from physical DH+ health.
Caution: DH+ and Remote I/O are legacy production networks; moving a trunk connector can interrupt multiple controllers or I/O racks at once.
