What to establish before troubleshooting

DeviceNet combines communications and 24 VDC network power, so physical-media, power, identity, and scanner-list faults can produce similar device symptoms.

Capture scanner codes and node LEDs before moving connectors or cycling network power.

Map the trunk and drops in physical order, then locate the boundary between consistently healthy and affected nodes.

Abbreviated worked example

Example: several adjacent nodes drop together

A scanner intermittently loses a group of downstream nodes while upstream devices remain stable.

  1. 1Record scanner codes, affected node numbers, physical order, network voltage, and the operating event.
  2. 2Inspect and test the common trunk, taps, connector, and power boundary before replacing individual nodes.
  3. 3Correct the single shared defect and verify voltage and communication stability at the farthest affected point.

Result: The common segment cause is found without swapping every device or disturbing the whole network.

Caution: Opening a live trunk or moving connectors can stop multiple devices and change the fault boundary; use the approved outage plan.
