What to establish before troubleshooting
A green Ethernet link and a successful ping do not prove that a Logix implicit I/O connection is established.
Begin at the faulted module in the I/O tree, preserve its extended status, and compare the configured catalog, revision, keying, parent path, RPI, and connection ownership with the installed device.
Move outward in one direction: controller configuration, communication path, adapter or device, local chassis or backplane, then field I/O and machine consequence.
Abbreviated worked example
Example: replacement adapter responds to ping but remains faulted
A replaced EtherNet/IP adapter has the expected IP address, yet the controller shows a yellow triangle and no valid input data.
- 1Capture the module fault and extended status before cycling power.
- 2Compare catalog, firmware, electronic keying, chassis size, slot order, parent path, and ownership.
- 3Correct only the proven mismatch, then observe connection state and input sequence changes through a controlled test.
Result: The technician proves whether identity, configuration, ownership, or the downstream rack is blocking the I/O relationship.
Caution: Disabling keying or inhibiting modules can create an unsafe configuration mismatch; use the approved change process.
