What to establish before troubleshooting
MicroLogix 1400 channels can support different physical layers and protocols, so the correct cable alone does not prove the configured service.
Preserve the application and channel settings before using default-communication features or downloads.
Treat Channel 0, Channel 1 Ethernet, and Channel 2 as separate communication paths with separate evidence.
Abbreviated worked example
Example: programming cable works only after DCOMM is enabled
A laptop cannot browse the controller through Channel 0 using the plant's expected DF1 settings.
- 1Record the channel configuration and production device that normally uses the port.
- 2Use the controller display to confirm whether default communications are intentionally enabled.
- 3Connect with verified default settings, upload and preserve the application, then restore the required production configuration.
Result: Engineering access is recovered without mistaking temporary default communications for the permanent plant setup.
Caution: Changing DCOMM or a channel protocol can interrupt an HMI, modem, SCADA, ASCII device, or serial network.
