What to establish before troubleshooting

Poor control is often caused by bad measurement, wrong scaling, incorrect action, irregular execution, output saturation, valve stiction, or process constraints rather than the gain values alone.

Prove the loop from sensor through scaling, instruction timing, mode and ownership, output path, final element, and process response before changing tuning; record every step and rollback value.

Abbreviated worked example

Example: temperature loop oscillates after valve service

A loop that was previously stable begins cycling after the control valve was rebuilt, even though PID gains did not change.

  1. 1Trend setpoint, PV, CV, mode, limits, and valve feedback at a fixed sample rate.
  2. 2Prove valve direction, deadband, stiction, and installed response before retuning the controller.

Result: The final-control-element change is separated from an algorithm problem and the original gains remain recoverable.

Caution: Open-loop steps and autotuning deliberately move the process; obtain process authority, safe limits, and an abort plan before testing.
