What to establish before troubleshooting
A PROFIBUS bus fault can originate at the master, one slave, an address or GSD/configuration mismatch, or the shared RS-485 segment.
Map which stations fail together; a boundary in the failure set often points to a connector, terminator, repeater, or segment location.
Check end termination and powered terminators, connector orientation, address uniqueness, cable/shield condition, and master diagnostics before replacing slaves.
Abbreviated worked example
Example: all stations after one cabinet disappear
Three downstream slaves fail together while upstream slaves remain healthy.
- 1Record master diagnostics and the last healthy/first failed station in physical bus order.
- 2Inspect the boundary connector, repeater/terminator power, cable strain, shield, and termination state under the approved outage.
- 3Repair the proven boundary defect and verify every downstream station returns with stable diagnostics.
Result: The shared segment fault is corrected without replacing three healthy slaves.
Caution: Changing termination can drop an entire segment; identify the two true segment ends and outage impact first.
