What to establish before troubleshooting
PROFINET uses a device name in addition to IP parameters; an IO controller expects the configured station identity, not only a pingable address.
Identify the physical device by MAC address and order number, compare the configured and actual topology, then assign the exact approved name and parameters.
After naming, verify controller ownership and module configuration rather than stopping at network discovery.
Abbreviated worked example
Example: a replacement ET 200 has the right IP but stays faulted
Maintenance assigns the old IP address to a replacement station, yet the controller still reports it missing.
- 1Locate the device by MAC address and physical switch port.
- 2Compare its current station name with the configured PROFINET device name in TIA Portal.
- 3Assign the approved name, verify topology and module order, then watch the controller establish the IO relationship.
Result: The controller recognizes the intended station without changing unrelated network devices.
Caution: Duplicate names or addresses can disrupt another station; isolate and identify the target before assignment.
