What to establish before troubleshooting
The same terminal value can mean normal data, underrange, overflow, or a configuration mismatch depending on module catalog, channel measurement type, and range.
Verify the electrical loop and module diagnostics before adjusting scale constants or filtering.
Preserve raw integer, normalized REAL, scaled engineering value, channel quality, and the physical reference reading together.
Abbreviated worked example
Example: 4-20 mA transmitter reads 0 percent at 4 mA
The loop current is correct, but the HMI shows zero or a negative value after a module replacement.
- 1Verify the exact module and channel are configured for the intended current range and wiring method.
- 2Record the raw value and diagnostic status at 4 mA, midpoint, and 20 mA.
- 3Apply the correct normalization endpoints and scale only after the raw representation is proven.
Result: The technician separates channel configuration from scaling logic and establishes a traceable three-point acceptance test.
Caution: Do not force an analog output or inject a signal into an energized process loop without the approved isolation and test plan.
