What to establish before troubleshooting

The FLT, RUN, and communication LEDs provide only the first boundary; the processor status file and exact fault code are needed before clearing memory or replacing hardware.

Preserve the running image, status words, chassis layout, keyswitch state, power history, and first fault event, then distinguish a user-program fault from power-supply, chassis, memory-module, I/O, or processor failure.

Abbreviated worked example

Example: SLC enters fault after a replacement output module

A SLC 5/05 faults when placed in Run after maintenance changed one chassis module.

  1. 1Capture the processor fault code and I/O configuration before clearing it.
  2. 2Compare the configured and installed slot catalog numbers, addressing, and chassis power load.

Result: The evidence proves an I/O configuration boundary instead of prompting an unnecessary processor replacement.

Caution: Clearing processor memory or downloading an unverified file can erase the best recovery point and energize outputs unexpectedly.
