What to establish before troubleshooting
A successful migration wizard does not prove that the converted project is complete, supported, or behaviorally equivalent to the running system.
Preserve a verified STEP 7 Classic master, identify every option package and integrated HMI, compile for consistency, inventory hardware and protected blocks, and define acceptance tests before opening a migration copy in TIA Portal.
Abbreviated worked example
Example: migration stops on missing option package
A complete-looking archived STEP 7 project opens on a new workstation, but TIA Portal migration aborts because an original engineering option is unavailable.
- 1Inventory installed option packages and licenses on the original engineering station.
- 2Rebuild and archive a consistent source project with all required sources, symbols, and HMI components before retrying on a copy.
Result: The missing engineering dependency is resolved without altering the only known-good project.
Caution: Never use the first automatically converted project as the production master; retain the original toolchain and rollback package until field acceptance is complete.
