What to establish before troubleshooting

The subnet mask determines which address bits describe the network and which describe the host. Devices make the same-subnet decision locally before they ever use a default gateway.

Write addresses in CIDR notation and calculate network, broadcast, and usable-host boundaries instead of relying on matching octets by sight.

Abbreviated worked example

Locate 192.168.10.34/24

A controller is configured as 192.168.10.34 with prefix /24.

  1. 1A /24 mask is 255.255.255.0, leaving eight host bits.
  2. 2Network is 192.168.10.0; broadcast is 192.168.10.255; typical usable hosts are .1 through .254.

Result: 192.168.10.34 is a usable host on 192.168.10.0/24.

Caution: Industrial networks may reserve address ranges, and host usability must still follow the site addressing plan.
